Adapted from Nigel Balchin’s novel 'A Way Through the Wood', Julian Fellowes’ directorial debut revolves around upper middle class barrister James Manning (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife Anne (Emily Watson). James and Anne’s wealth affords them life’s finest luxury accoutrements, including residences in both London and the country, expensive cars, and servants. However, restlessness simmers underneath this apparently cheery, perfect veneer. Anne catapults their domestic bliss into chaos when she begins a passionate affair with William Bule (Rupert Everett), son of a leading local family. When a mysterious Range Rover runs down the husband of the Manning’s loyal maid Maggie (Linda Bassett), Anne and William come under suspicion for the murder from both the police and James, who endeavours to protect his wife by helping to cover up her possible role in the crime. However, their problems intensify when Anne is unwilling to cast aside her younger lover to return to her husband...
