Faraway, So Close!

synopsis

In this long-awaited sequel to 'Wings Of Desire', Wenders returns to the familiar characters of that film, charting the progress of the now earthbound ex-angel Damiel, and of Germany since the fall of the wall. Having shot the earlier film in West Berlin, the setting this time is the former East Germany, and the film addresses the end of the "honeymoon" period which followed unification. Wenders weaves together fantasy (the angels who walk the earth, listening in on thoughts, viewing the world in black and white) and harsh reality (gangsters, gun-running and western consumerism) in a tale of blurred boundaries, where Peter Falk plays himself playing Columbo, and where one character (Willem Dafoe) moves freely between the earthly and heavenly worlds - a character whose earthly name is a reversal of Time itself! The film also features the acting debut of former Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev, and a specially written concert sequence featuring Lou Reed.
