It is 1948, and the somewhat eccentric Major Giles Flack (John Cleese) has been placed in charge of preparing the Song And Dance Unit, South-East Asia (SADUSEA) to entertain the British troops stationed in Malaysia. On hand as "creative director" is Acting Captain Terri Dennis (Denis Quilley), an ageing theatrical queen whose main talent is for impersonating Carmen Miranda and the Andrews Sisters. Struggling to survive in the war-torn jungle, amidst the flying bullets and spreading disease, the members of SADUSEA also have to cope with the trials and tribulations of having to perform musical drag routines in front of battle-weary troops. Meanwhile, unknown to the beleaguered band of entertainers, their presence on the front line is being used as a cover by the corrupt Sergeant Major Red Drummond (Michael Elphick), who is illegally dealing arms to rebel guerrillas.
