A swashbuckling classic in the grand style. 'THE PRISONER OF ZENDA' is an adventure of conspiracy, romance and flashing swords. Far off in the fictional kingdom of Ruritania lives King Rudolf (Stewart Grainger) and his wicked half-brother, the Duke of Streslau (Robert Douglas). On the eve of his coronation, Rudolf is kidnapped by the Duke's henchman Rupert of Hentzau (James Mason) in a conspracy to usurp the throne. As fortune would have it, Rudolf Rassendyll (Stewart Granger) appears on the scene. He so strikingly resembles the King that he could pass for his twin. Enlisted by the loyal Colonel Zapt to save the crown, Rassendyll agrees to masquerade as the King. His adventure leads him from an ill-fated romance with the beautiful Princess Flavia (Deborah Kerr), King Rudolf's betrothed, to a web of treachery which finally culminates in sabre-and-dagger combat with the villainous Rupert.
