The Kid Stakes*

synopsis

"The Kid Stakes" tells the story of a group of children from Woolloomooloo in Sydney who are goodies and baddies when it comes to the adventure of Fatty Finn and his friends as they enter Fatty's pet goat Hector in a race. The film was made on location in Woolloomooloo streets and the palatial Potts Point home of theatrical entrepreneur, Hugh Ward. The goat race was a real one held in Rockhampton because goat races were prohibited in New South Wales at that time. Performances from the children are delightful, with director Tal Ordell's son, Robin ('Pop'), playing Fatty. The gentle humour of the film is in evidence both in the screen action and the frequently witty inter-titles. The origins of the adventures of Fatty Finn were Syd Nicholl's comic strips in the Sydney Sunday News newspaper.
