The Hill

synopsis

Sean Connery stars in this disturbing study of military misfit, soldiers sent to a prison compound in North Africa. Looming over the prison is the ''hill'', a man made purgatory of rock and sand where the men are disciplined by mental and physical torture. Connery, in one of his finest ever screen performances, plays Roberts, an officer imprisoned for refusing to go on a suicide mission. There are also career-best portrayals from Harry Andrews, as the plain-speaking Sergeant Major who runs the prison, and Ian Hendry, superb as the dangerous sadist Williams, whose behaviour causes the death of a man leading to conflict within the camp. This unremitting drama written by Ray Rigby is unique in that it features no background score at all, and is distinguished by truly brilliant direction from Sidney Lumet.
