People's Century: Vol 3 of 4*

synopsis

Episodes 8-10 of the acclaimed BBC TV series. No chronicle of the 20th century has ever come so close to the true spirit of the age. People's Century is a unique combination of rare archival footage and personal testimony. Through fascinating eyewitness accounts this acclaimed series examines how political, economic and technological changes transformed the lives of ordinary people.

Episode 8: 1929 Breadline: The Great Depression echoes around the world bringing unemployment and poverty. In America, it needed Roosevelt's New Deal to bring fresh hope while Europe's re-armament brought new fears alongside new jobs.

Episode 9: 1933 Master Race: The rise of Hitler leads to the philosophy of the Master Race. Discrimination and persecution of non-Aryans increases and in 1942 leads to their systematic extermination - the Holocaust.

Episode 10: 1939 Total War: No-one was spared in World War II: more civilians died than soldiers. The citizens of Leningrad endured starvation and siege, while mass air raids killed hundreds of thousands in Europe and Asia.
