An adaptation of the novel by Ian McEwan. On a picturesque summer’s day in a rolling green field in Oxford, Joe (Daniel Craig) and Claire (Samantha Morton) relish each other’s company in the afternoon sun. They are about to open a bottle of champagne, when Claire points transfixed at the spectacle above them. A red hot air balloon drifts near to the ground with a small boy trapped inside the basket while an elderly man chases desperately behind. Joe, and three others who have watched the scene unfold, race towards the balloon to help the boy’s father regain control. As they struggle to weigh it down a fateful gust of wind rises over the hill, lifting the balloon and rescuers buoyantly into the air. The traumatic incident is a catalyst for the actions of fellow rescuer Jed, (Rhys Ifans) who starts to believe that God has united them and fixates on Joe. Slowly Joe, Claire and Jed are pushed to the boundaries of sanity by the events of that day, and by an enduring and obsessive love... |
