Permanent Vacation

synopsis

The film that defined Jarmusch’s unique style, Permanent Vacation is an intimate study in the search for meaning in life. Suffering a bout of insomnia, sixteen year old drifter, Aloysious (Chris Parker), wanders through downtown Manhattan in search of some kind of cure for his loneliness. A chance encounter leads him to commit a crime, perhaps more from boredom than personal gain, and sends him on a journey through a world populated by a series of larger-than-life characters: a busker (played by the legendary John Lurie); a dodgy, stolen car dealer; a war veteran, a French traveller who may be his doppelganger. A must see for lovers of Jarmusch’s films, Permanent Vacation is the definition of cool: with a hip, urban soundtrack interspersed with the music of jazz legend Charlie Parker it is the film that redefined cinema.
