Alexander, a great author beset with failing health and facing the prospect of his own death, despairingly prepares to leave forever his family home. However, following the discovery of an old letter from his late wife, evoking memories of happier times and a chance encounter with a young Albanian orphan, Alexander's sense of hope is rekindled as he embarks on a strange journey, in which past and present are intertwined... Featuring a moving performance by Bruno Ganz, 'Eternity and a Day' is a beautifully crafted, luminous film from Theo Angelopuolos, which was unanimously voted the winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival 1998.
