Despite losing a ship on the Cape, James Onedin is in an optimistic mood. The American Civil War has ended, bringing new opportunities for the shipping trade. For James to profit he needs to wrestle control of the company and add a modern steamship to the Onedin Line. Daniel Fogarty stands in the way of both plans.
The sudden death of Albert Callon and his son in a warehouse fire brings a new principle share holder to the Onedin Line — Callon's young niece Emma. As James sails to the West Indies, driving his men to near mutiny, Emma places her trust in Fogarty.
The second series of the fascinating saga of the Onedin Line is set against the backdrop of the 1870s, when the Suez Canal was being built and France was at war with Prussia. Sequences filmed at sea play an even bigger part in this series, and were filmed on location off the coast of Britain and in the Caribbean.
