The Women (2008)

synopsis

The Women whisks us into a busy pocket of Manhattan. At the centre of the tale is Mary Haines (Meg Ryan), a thoroughly modern woman suddenly confronted with an age-old dilemma: a cheating husband. Mary appears to have it all: a beautiful home, a lovely 12-year old daughter, a successful Wall Street husband, and a career as a fashion designer.

One thing Mary can always count on is the wonderful company of her girlfriends, Sylvia (Bening), the impeccably chic editor of a major fashion magazine, Edie (Messing), eccentric mother of five and Alex (Pinkett Smith). author and forthright glamour-puss.

The ladies swiftly rally to Mary's side upon learning of her husband's infidelity at the hands of a backstabbing shopgirl. The trouble resides at Saks Fifth Avenue, with the store's resident gold-digger, a perfume "spritzer girl" named Crystal Allen (Mendes). So these funny, enterprising and very protective women take matters into their own hands...

This is a remake and is recommended for light viewing with plenty of style and glamour. Escapism viewing.

My husband left the room after watching 10 minutes of this movie! I watched it to the very end and, although I did find it very American, I also found it very enlightening. It is not your average 'chick flick', but rather an insightful look at women's lives and relationships. I just loved the Bette Midler cameo - so typical Bette!
