Paul Duncan (Greg Kinnear), a teacher, and his photographer wife Jessie (Rebecca Romijn Stamos) live a normal family life with their son Adam (Cameron Bright) until the day he is suddenly killed in a traffic accident. The couple are devastated until one day when they are approached by Dr. Richard Wells (Robert De Niro) who suddenly offers them new hope.
