When Joanna (Nicole Kidman) and husband Walter (Matthew Broderick) arrive from Manhattan, she can’t help but notice that her female neighbours lack personality and character. The one exception to the rule is her new friend Bobbie (Bette Midler) - a cranky, sarcastic alcoholic who definitely does not fit the Stepford mould. The two decide to investigate the plague of perfect wives and discover a shocking secret: all the husbands in the neighbourhood have banded together to replace their human wives with cyborg copies. Instead of a wife that nags, their robotic replacements are subservient, sexually compliant and devoid of any distinguishing character traits. With Walter becoming “one of the boys” and befriending Bobbie’s hubby Dave (Jon Lovitz), are the remaining human wives in danger of being superseded?
