This wry and amusing working class comedy is an early work by writer/director Mike Leigh. Frank (Jeff Robert) and his two deadbeat sons, Mark (Phil Daniels) and Colin (Tim Roth) are unemployed and living in a cramped apartment in London's East End. Wanting to escape the doldrums of his mediocre world, Colin spends countless hours with Coxy (Gary Oldman), a reckless skinhead. This new friendship sparks fear into Colin's family, whose overzealous attempts to direct Colin on the straight path end up unsuccessful. Backed by an outstanding supporting cast, Mike Leigh once again blends the right mixture of humour and pathos painting an incisive portrait of the tensions that exist within a working class family. |
