Often mistaken as a Jimi Hendrix concert, Rainbow Bridge is actually a dizzying mix of countercultural lifestyles and politics set Hawaii 1970. Directed by Chuck Wein, Rainbow Bridge tracks the journey of actress Pat Hartley across the Pacific to Maui, Hawaii. Once in Maui, Hartley is immediately welcomed by a group of young people determined to establish a new alternative community.
While the film’s soundtrack is filled throughout with such classic Hendrix studio recordings as Pali Gap and Dolly Dagger, the centrepiece of Rainbow Bridge remains the 17 minutes of Hendrix’s July 1970 concert atop Haleakala Volcano in Maui, Hawaii. Accompanied by film’s cast and crew, Hartley is treated to a private performance by the legendary guitarist. Hendrix is joined by bassist Billy Cox and drummer Mitch Mitchell and delivers high-voltage renditions of Foxy Lady, Hey Baby (The Land of The New Rising Sun), as well as exciting excerpts of Hear My Train A Comin’, Purple Haze, and Voodoo Chile (Slight Return). |
