Rita Tushingham plays Kate, a young Dublin girl who is irresistibly attracted to Eugene (Peter Finch), a middle-aged writer, who seems more worldly and knowledgeable than she. When Kate and Eugene begin living together, she finds herself ostracized by her family, the church and society in general because Eugene is still considered to be a married man, even though he is seperated from his wife. As time goes by Kate's insecurity in her relationship is reflected in her increasing possessiveness, which only makes Eugene more distant and her more unhappy. The situation finally comes to a head when Eugene's wife makes a reappearance and the couple are forced to confront the reality of what is left of their relationship. Based on Edna O'Brien's novel 'Lonely Girl' and in the tradition of other British films produced in the early 60's, 'The Girl With Green Eyes' is at times harsh in its realism, but astonishingly powerful in its message.
