Loulou is the story of a love affair between two young Parisians from totally different social backgrounds. Gerard Depardieu plays Loulou, a layabout and petty criminal who meets middle-class Nelly (Isabelle Huppert) at a disco. Nelly works in advertising and has been living for three years with her boss Andre (Guy Marchand). However, she is bored with her life and with Andre's possessiveness and violent tempers and she decides to leave him to move in with Loulou. Andre is distraught and cannot believe the affair will last. All the three central characters are brilliantly portrayed and the atmosphere of low-life Paris drips from the screeen. Maurice Pialat gained international recognition with the success of Loulou and is now acknowledged as one of the world's leading filmmakers.
