The Whales Of August

synopsis

Two elderly sisters, Libby (Bette Davis) and Sarah (Lillian Gish) living on a Maine island, are set in a mutual dependency which threatens to fall apart. Their daily routines are interrupted by their old friend Tisha, the questionable attentions of the mysterious Mr Maranov (Vincent Price), and Joshua Brackett (Harry Carey Jr.), a crusty handyman. The two sisters must decide whether to give up their family home, independence and their life together. Their decision must be made when the Summer turns to Autumn, marked by the arrival of the whales in the bay. Together they are about to rediscover love, youth and friendship.
