Reality and illusion collide in the baby of Macon, a masque performed to a 17th Century audience. An old woman gives birth and the community celebrate it as a miracle. The child seems imbued with mystical powers, which are exploited not least by his sister (Julia Ormond). When she seduces the bishop's son (Ralph Fiennes), the masque rises to a shocking and brutal climax. Greenaway has created his most controversial film yet, a stunning pageant play with modern parallels.
