A British deep-sea trawler CAISTOR vanishes in the Arctic waters off northern Norway - an icy international border where the military forces of NATO and the Soviet Union play a cat-and-mouse game of surveillance and counter-surveillance. No wreckage is recovered and all 26 crew are presumed dead. Families and friends of the crew refuse to accept the conclusion of the formal inquiry - that the ship capsized in heavy seas. They enlist the help of journalist, Martin Taylor, whose father was chief engineer aboard the CAISTOR, to investigate the fate of the ship.
