Penniless naturalist William Adamson (Mark Rylance) is taken into the home of rich philanthropist Rev. Harold Alabaster (Jeremy Kemp) where he falls in love with Eugenia (Patsy Kensit), Alabaster's youngest daughter, as soon as his sets eyes on her. Soon married to Eugenia, William's life within the large aristocratic family makes him uneasy, not least because Eugenia's brutish brother Edgar (Douglas Henshall) makes no secret of his dislike for him. To further confuse him Eugenia's behaviour continues to be erratic, whilst producing a succession of children, she remains passionately sexual yet cooly distant. Befriended by Matty Crompton (Kristin Scott Thomas), an impoverished relative living with the Alabaster family, William discovers the decay and corruption within the family and is soon plunged into a realm of perversion that surpasses his wildest imagination. A powerful romantic drama of shocking sensuality, Angels & Insects uncovers the dark and decadent desires lurking just beneath the surface of Victorian England.
