Forced to support her family when the murder of her father leaves them penniless, Rosina da Silva assumes a new identity as a governess. Reluctantly leaving her charmed and privileged life behind in London, she journeys to the remote Scottish Isle of Skye and the bleak surroundings of the Cavendish family home.
