The Roots saga begins in Gambia, West Africa, 1750 with the birth of Kunta Kinte to Mandinka villagers, Binta and Omoro. Munta grows up and distinguishes himself in manhood training rituals. But he does not enjoy his new status long: slave traders sweeping throughout the countryside capture him. Chained with other unfourtunates aboard the slave ship Lord Ligonier, Kunta begins an agonised odyssey to the New World.
