When Maggie Peyton (Lindsay Lohan) receives a dilapidated Volkswagen Beetle as a college graduation gift from her father Ray (Michael Keaton) her dreams of being a NASCAR competitor seem more distant than ever. Whilst her father spends his days supporting her brother Ray Peyton Jr.'s (Breckin Meyer) stalling racing career, Maggie is busy restoring Herbie with the help of her friend Kevin (Justin Long). Quickly realising that her car is no ordinary run-around, she lets Herbie do the driving as she comes up against all time racing champion, Trip Murphy (Matt Dillon) at a local car show. As her victory against Trip fires up her ambition, she realises that her secret ambition of winning the Daytona 500 may not have stalled after all. But Herbie has a mind of his own and its up to Maggie to convince him that although he wears the number 53, he will always be her number one...
