Hank Deerfield, a retired Army veteran (Tommy Lee Jones) receives a call from his son's CO telling him that his son has gone AWOL a few days after returning from a tour of duty in Iraq.
Deerfield gets into his pickup truck and travels to his son's base to try to find out the truth about what happened, both during his tour in Iraq and on the days since his return.
What follows is a passionate personal and mystery drama during which Deerfield, at times with help from Detective Emily Sanders (Charlize Theron), uncovers a deeply disturbing story about his son's fate and overall the mental state of a number of returning Iraq veterans.
