Lemon Tree

synopsis

Selma Zidane is a widowed Palestinian who has been tending her lemon grove since her father's death. When the Israeli Defence Minister moves into the neighbouring property, his security staff declare that her cherished orchard has the potential to act as a cover for terrorist groups, and order that it is destroyed. With the help of Ziad Daud, a young Palestinian lawyer, Selma goes to the Israeli Supreme Court to try and save her trees. Despite the significant cultural and political divides, Selma's plight raises the interest of the Defence Minister's wife, who finds herself drawn to her mysterious neighbour. As the bond between the two women strengthens, the question remains; what will come of Selma's beloved lemon trees?

Gentle drama

I welcomed the opportunity to learn a little more about Israel and Palestine in this gentle drama. It tells the story of an otherwise unknown Palestinian woman who becomes the centre of a major legal battle between her and the Israel secret service and military. Her quiet determination and courage are inspiring. Her underlying personal grief is effective in portraying the grief of a nation.
