Hannibal (1959)

synopsis

Love and war intertwine in this stunning epic of the story of Hannibal, the brilliant Carthiginian general who dared to oppose Rome. Fuelled by hatred of Roman supremacy, Hannibal (Victor Mature) drives his army of elephants through the treacherous, frozen Alps into Italy, crushing anyone who stands in his path.

During his advance, Hannibal calls upon his strategic genius to inflict on the Roman army, the greatest defeat in its history. He captures the beautiful Sylvia (Rita Gam), the niece of a Roman senator - not to hold her hostage, but to show her the might of his army and let her spread the news of impending doom. Rome waits in terror as its most feared enemy, and his elephant army, advances. However, unexpected love grows between the great General and Sylvia that may lead to his ultimate downfall.
