The American Friend

synopsis

In Wim Wenders' adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel 'Ripley's Game', Dennis Hopper stars as American sociopath Tom Ripley, making a living as the middle-man selling the works of painter Derwatt, who has feigned his own death in order to increase the value of his works. At an auction in Berlin, Ripley meets picture framer Jonathan Zimmerman (Bruno Ganz), a man who believes he is dying from a rare blood disease. When Ripley is approached by a criminal acquaintance who wants him to find a "non-professional" hitman to carry out a contract killing for him, Ripley decides Zimmerman would be the perfect choice for the role of assassin. Already facing death, Zimmerman has nothing to lose and Ripley convinces him that taking on the job would allow him to leave behind a large sum of inheritance money for his wife and children. Things begin to go wrong when Ripley and Zimmerman become friends, forging a bond steeped in deceit, corruption and, eventually, murder. Directors Sam Fuller ands Nicholas Ray make notable cameo appearances in Wenders' artful thriller, nominated for the Palme D'Or in 1977.
