The Towering Inferno

synopsis

Doug Roberts (Paul Newman) is an architect who has just returned from a long vacation to find the work on his new skyscraper nearly completed. He goes to its Opening Party concerned he's found that his wiring specifications have not been followed. The party goes on, despite the building's wiring experiencing continual short circuits. Sure enough a fire begins, leaving Michael O'Halleran (Steve McQueen), the fire chief on duty, to complete a series of daring rescues –which are only exacerbated by the building being too tall to have a fire successfully fought from the ground. McQueen and Newman are joined by the star studded cast of William Holden, Faye Dunaway, Fred Astaire, Richard Chamberlain, Robert Wagner and O.J. Simpson! Fred Astaire won a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for his performance as Best Supporting Actor, and the film received eight Oscar Nominations (of which it won three).

Better than I expected

I'm not usually a fan of disaster movies but this was better than I expected. More believable now, I suspect, after what we saw happen on 9/11(2001). Very dramatic with a great cast and surprisingly good special FX for 1974. 7 out of 10
