Gerard Depardieu won the Best Actor prize at the 1985 Venice Film Festival for his portrayal of the uncompromising inspector in Police, the powerful thriller which gave Pialat his first really huge commercial success in France. The seedy French underworld is brilliantly depicted in a semi-documentary style and Depardieu, acknowledged as one of the greatest screen actors of his generation, is totally at ease with the improvisation technique favoured by Pialat. Depardieu plays Mangin, a tough Parisian cop who is trying to break a Tunisian drug smuggling ring. In the course of his investigations, Mangin meets and falls in love with the drug – carrier's girlfriend, Noria, a compulsive liar, who has stolen cash and drugs from the gang. In order to save her life, Mangin has to return the money to the very gang he has been trying to capture.
