This is the tragic and magnificent last film of two of the greatest film stars of all time. Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe and Montgomery Clift star in this symbolic contemporary western, specially written for Marilyn by her then-husband, playwright Arthur Miller, about a group of drifters in Nevada, Gable is particularly fine, strenuously enduring physical horse stunts that would result in his death only eight days after shooting ended, his scenes with Marilyn achieving a touching resonance as their characters strive to reach a happiness neither can grasp. Under the sensitive direction of cinema genius John Huston, this finely-wrought 1961 movie already had the makings of a classic. With its cast no longer with us, its status is assured.
