The FBI Story

synopsis

There's no thrill like the thrill of The F.B.I. Story! Whilst lecturing to a class of recruits on a particular case, F.B.I.Agent Chip Hardesty (James Stewart) wanders from the point, and is soon telling them the history of the F.B.I. As seen through his eyes, he recalls the astonishing development since the 1920s right up to the present day (the 1950s). The excitement of law enforcement is juxtaposed with scenes from the agent's home life. Personal triumphs and tragedies are set against the battle with America's most notorious criminals. The Public Enemy's of the 1930s to the Communist spy rings of post-war America all fall prey to the growing power and strength of the bureau. The changing face of American crime fighting is illustrated in a series of flashbacks which also documents Hardesty's courtship and marriage to his wife (Vera Miles), their children being born and the tragic death of their son in the Pacific fighting in World War II.
