Based on Louisa M. Alcott's beloved novel, this story of four sisters growing up in Massachusetts during the American Civil War is one of Hollywood's most enduring classics. We enter their world to share their joys and sorrows as they become the 'little women' that their father so proudly calls them. With the war and passing years, the girls must accept that they can never recapture the carefree, happy experiences of their youth. Wild, tempestuous Jo (Katherine Hepburn) spurns the marriage proposal of Laurie (Douglas Montgomery), the rich boy next door, to pursue a writing career - and true love in the form of a humble professor (Paul Lukas). Sisters Amy (Joan Bennett) and Meg (Frances Dee) build new lives with new romances. Frail, sickly Beth (Jean Parker), whom all adore, bravely faces her own sad fate. This original movie version, an early showcase for Miss Hepburn, was directed by George Cukor (Dinner At Eight, Gaslight) and won the Academy Award for Best Screenplay (Adaptation) in 1933.
