VOLUME 9:
The Great War has left Europe tottering on an economic tightrope, and Soames, now on the board of a large insurance company, is nervous about its foreign investments.
Fleur's flirtation with the despairing Michael Desert ends and she finds herself expecting Michael's child, much to her father's satisfaction. Michael, meanwhile pricked by his burgeoning social conscience, attempts to help a struggling former employee. But his plan backfires and the result brings only anger and shame to the man he seeks to benefit.
VOLUME 10:
The fast changing 20s go galloping on, and the economy worsens as society trips carelessly through its soirées and fashions.
A scandal at the insurance company causes Soames to resign from the board in a flurry of anger, and although a birth brings celebration and reconciliation to the family, scandal of another kind is brewing for them. While, in America, romance stirs again for Jon, and there is the hint that not all the wounds of past love have been healed by time.
