A powerful drama unfolds when genteel, Oxford educated Colonel Basil Barrow (John Mills) arrives to take command at the barrcks where bluff hard drinking Major Jock Sinclair (Alec Guinness) has been Acting Colonel. Under Jock's command, the officers and men have enjoyed a certain laxity that seems harmless to all except the incoming Colonel, a stickler for the rule book and a rigidly stubborn man. Tension mounts as they clash over a series of issues. The climax when it comes, is as moving as it is shocking.
