From the director of Latcho Drom, Gadjo Dilo (The Crazy Stranger) is the story of Stephane (Romain Duris) a young Frenchman who travels to Romania in search of a Gypsy singer. He befriends an old Gypsy man, Isidor (Izidor Serban), who takes him to stay at his house in a Gypsy village. Stephane seeks out the local Gypsy communities, recording their songs and music on his portable Dat machine, becoming closer to vodka-loving Izidor and hot-tempered beauty, Sabina (Rona Hartner). Set in the Romanian winter, the Gypsy culture is depicted in all its glory and squalor. It is a fantastically different world. The soundtrack is rich and varied. A bilingual film, it shifts skilfully, and often amusingly between French and Romany (the local dialect). Gadjo Dilo is funny, beautiful and vibrant, expressing a real joy for life and was an audience favourite at both the Sydney and Melbourne Film Festivals.
