In Neil Jordon's classy heist movie The Good Thief (a loose remake of Jean-Pierre Melville's 1955 Bob Le Flambeur) Nick Nolte plays American ex-pat Bob, a down-on-his-luck gambler with a drug habit, now living on the French Riviera. One last chance at making a fortune arises when Bob and his underworld accomplices come up with an audacious plan to steal some priceless paintings from a Monte Carlo casino. All the time, Bob also has to evade the attentions of a persistent detective (Tcheky Karyo) while keeping a paternalistic eye on young Eastern European immigrant Anne (Nutsa Kukhiani).
